While raising a cat is somewhat similar to raising a dog, cats differ in temperament, dietary habits, and behavior. Cats should not be confined to cages or single rooms; they need freedom to roam as they please. Restricting their movement can lead to respiratory issues.
Unlike dogs, cat claws should never be clipped. If claws are trimmed, the cat may hide in dark places, avoiding open spaces until its claws grow back. Additionally, cats should not be handled roughly. When necessary, support them by holding the skin at the neck and back with one hand, and securing the four legs with the other.
Cats are picky eaters compared to dogs. They prefer meat, eggs, fish, and milk. A kitten will separate from its mother within two months. Cats can suffer from influenza, rabies, respiratory issues, digestive problems, and skin diseases. Unlike dogs, medication cannot be administered to cats orally in the same way.
Topical insecticides should not be applied to cats, as they tend to lick their coats and ingest the substance, potentially affecting their health. When a cat is unwell, it’s best to consult a veterinarian.
Diseases such as rabies, cat-scratch fever, rickettsial fever, leptospirosis, amebiasis, and skin diseases can spread from cats to humans. Raising cats with the advice of a veterinarian will ensure a healthy and satisfying pet ownership experience.
